ELECTORAL REGISTRATION
PUBLICATION
Each year the Electoral Registration Officer, who in Crewe and
Nantwich is the Chief Executive of Crewe and Nantwich Borough
Council, is required to publish the Register of Electors. A
new Register is published each year on 1st December.
QUALIFICATION
Everyone who is a citizen of the United Kingdom, the
Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland who is resident in the
Borough and is over 18 years of age during the currency of the
Register has the right to be registered and to vote at all
elections. Other European Union citizens have limited
voting rights. People who live overseas may register if they
have lived in Crewe and Nantwich at any time in the last fifteen
years.
HOW THE REGISTER IS COMPILEDEvery
September the Electoral Registration Officer sends a form to every
household in the area asking for the names of all those in the
houshold who qualify to vote. If there is no change to the
existing details, you may re-register over the telephone or the
internet. It is a legal requirement to register. Using this
information, a register is published on 1 December and electors are
advised to ensure that their names are included. This is
available for inspection at the Municipal Buildings in Crewe and
the Nantwich District Office. Alternatively you can phone to
ask the Electoral Registration Office. If you are not on the
register then arrangements can be made to add your details to
it.

VOTING
In most areas there is a local government election on the first
Thursday in May. Parliamentary Elections must be held within
five years after the last one and European elections are held in
June, every five years. Some places have a Parish Council
which is elected every four years. The next scheduled local
elections are on 1 May 2008.
Electors receive a poll card before the election informing them
of the date and times of the election and where their polling
station is. Polling stations are places such as village halls
and schools.
At the polling station you are given a ballot paper setting
out the names and political parties (if any) of the candidates at
the election. All you need to do is put a cross against the
name of the person you wish to vote for and put it in the ballot
box.
If you wish you can nominate someone to vote on your
behalf by completing a
Proxy Vote form - this
gives a named individual your authority to cast a vote on your
behalf. To do this you must firstly live in the Borough and
be on the electoral register. You can then complete a Proxy
Vote nomination form which can be requested by e-mailing
elections@crewe-nantwich.gov.uk
- please include your name and full postal address in order that
the form can be despatched to you.
POSTAL VOTING
Applicants can fill in the new postal vote application
form. Please make sure that you complete all parts
of the form, as appropriate.
