Local Government Reorganisation
The number of councils in
Cheshire will be reduced from seven to just two to take effect on
1st April 2009. Two new unitary authorities will be created,
Cheshire East Joint
Authority and Cheshire West and
Chester Joint Authority.
"Detailed consideration has been given to both the single unitary
and two-unitary proposals for Cheshire, which both met the
Government's strict criteria. The two-unitary proposal has been
judged as most likely to improve leadership, services and the
involvement of communities. This decision confirms that the
proposal for a single unitary Cheshire will not proceed." according
to a CLG statement.

Cheshire East Unitary Authority
Cheshire East Council will bring
together the boroughs of Macclesfield, Congleton and Crewe &
Nantwich, and Cheshire County Council. The new Council will be the
third largest unitary authority in the North West, giving it a
powerful strategic voice in the UK and enabling it to drive forward
initiatives to support the development of its communities.
81 councillors from 27 wards were
elected on Thursday 1 May 2008 to serve in the shadow authority and
make decisions about the new council operations. Cheshire East will
cover a population of 358,900.
