THE SNOW HILL OPPORTUNITY

Showhill Thumbnail Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council want the views of the people of Nantwich as to how best to develop the Snow Hill area to the benefit of the town as a whole.

The Snow Hill study area, including the former gas works on St. Anne’s Lane, covers around 6 hectares of land.  It includes:

  • The existing Nantwich Pool and Brine Pool
  • Around 300 car parking spaces
  • Retail and other commercial properties on Swine Market
  • Public toilets and recycling facilities
  • The River Weaver

The Council previously established four main objectives for Snow Hill.  These are:

  • Refurbish or build a new Nantwich Pool and Brine Pool (including a new roof on the Brine Pool).
  • To radically improve the appearance of Swine Market.
  • To maintain levels of car parking across the town.
  • Bring about high quality development on the former gas works site at St. Anne’s Lane.

A feasibility study completed in 2007 confirmed that the area has good development potential.  Any development of the site would have to be of the highest possible quality to reflect the character of the town.  ‘Big box’, retail park type development would not be appropriate.  However, quality development of sufficient scale based around new streets and spaces would be necessary to deliver on the objectives for Snow Hill.

The Council has now asked Broadway Malyan, independent consultants, to consult the public and other stakeholders on the shape of development.  A series of events are taking place to gather the views of the community and help decide a way forward.
