Paper Collection Scheme

Paper Bin

Latest News
New calendars have now been issued to all residents detailing the collection dates for the six-weekly collection, if you have not yet received your calendar, contact us on 01270 537826 and we will get one sent out to you.

Here is a reminder of what you can put into your green bin:

  • Magazines
  • Brochures
  • Catalogues
  • Newspapers
  • Junk Mail no envelopes
  • White Office Paper
Please also be careful if you put any correspondence in your paper bin which contains any personal details, e.g., bank account details.  The council are advising people to shred this information, as small quantities of shredded paper will be accepted at the kerbside.

Bins still need to be presented by 7.00am on the designated day of collection.  If any household requires additional containers then please contact the Paper Collection Service and they will be happy to advise you.

If you do not have a collection calendar for your paper recycling bin, please contact the Paper Collection Scheme on 01270 537826 or e-mail recycling@crewe-nantwich.gov.uk

How The Scheme Works

The Council has provided a green wheeled bin which is about half the volume of your normal grey bin. Some residents have opted for bags or a box. These are ideal for anyone with limited room for storing the wheelie bin.
  • A calendar sticker should be on the outside of your bin (if you don't have one please contact the office on 01270  537826)
  • We will collect it on the due date (once every six weeks).
  • We will be collecting on Bank Holidays (with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day). The paper we collect is sent to the paper mill and not the landfill site, which is closed to us on Bank Holidays.
  • Communal properties & sheltered housing areas are to have communal containers.

What do you need to do?
  • Keep the bin safe. Each bin has a security bar code allocated to your property.
  • Fill it with the right sort of paper.
  • Take the bin to and from the edge of your property on collection day. Either at the front or to a nearby collection point. Please present it for 7.00am. (If you are infirm or have a disability we may be able to pull the bin out and return it after emptying. Phone us on 01270 537826)

Who are you doing it for?

Yourself and your children. It's to do with improving the quality of life on a global scale - reducing pollution and using less of the earth's natural resources.

South Cheshire Friends of the Earth say:
"We are pleased to see that, at last, Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council is providing suitable collection facilities for paper recycling."

"The new small bin will enable all households who take a daily paper or who buy magazines to store the paper outside the house awaiting collection. We regard this as a significant improvement on the blue bag scheme."

"Using the recycling facilities provided is a small but effective way in which each resident can contribute to reducing the waste mountain that we have to deal with in this country. We owe it to future generations to deal with our own rubbish in a sustainable manner now. Please make an effort. Everyone needs to start recycling NOW."

Did you know?

Less than half the paper used in the U.K is recovered; over 5 million tonnes goes to landfill. This would fill 103,448 double decker buses which if parked nose to tail would go all the way from London to Milan.

Shotton Paper Mill makes recycled paper from the paper collected in Crewe & Nantwich Borough. The energy saved by Shotton in using ONLY RECYCLED PAPER is equivalent to turning off 12 light bulbs in every house in the Borough EACH YEAR. The saving in power operation reduces CO2 emissions by 118,000 tonnes per annum. This is equivalent to saving 300 million car miles per annum.

For every tonne of waste the Borough Council deposits on the landfill site, the Government taxes us £21. This is set to rise to £35 by 2011 / 12, and this is likely to increase.

So what is the right sort of paper?

The paper collected in the list below will be taken to Shotton paper mill, where it will be made into newsprint for local, regional and national newspapers.
  • Magazines
  • All brochures
  • All Catalogues
  • Newspapers
  • All Junk Mail - Please remove the envelopes (To stop junk mail call The Mailing Preference Service on 0845 703 4599)
  • All White Office Paper

PLEASE BE CAREFUL IF YOU PUT ANY CORRESPONDENCE IN YOUR BIN WHICH HAS YOUR BANK ACCOUNT OR CREDIT / DEBIT CARD DETAILS ON. THIS INFORMATION NEEDS TO BE SHREDDED IF POSSIBLE.

What don't we want?

The following items cannot be recycled into high quality newsprint, so please do not put them into your green bin as they will contaminate the paper.
  • Cardboard and boxes because they are made from a different type of wood fibre and cannot be recycled into newsprint (put these in your silver bin)
  • Telephone Directories because they are normally twelve months old and therefore cannot be de-inked successfully. Also the yellow dye in Yellow Pages cannot be removed (put these in your silver bin)
  • Envelopes because of the glue, and they are made from a different type of wood fibre (put these in your silver bin)
  • Greetings Cards because they are made from a different kind of pulp, some are decorated with foil & glitter and many are glued (put these in your silver bin if they aren't heavily foil and glitter decorated)
  • Drinks cartons because they are wax or plastic film coated
  • Paper cups and plates
  • Napkins, Paper Towels, and Tissues for hygiene reasons and they are typically wet
  • Wallpaper because of the glue, paint, dye and finishes
  • Sanitary Products
  • Shrink Wrap
  • Food & food wrappers
  • Gift wrapping paper
  • Polystyrene
  • Carbon Paper
  • Plastic covered items
  • Any other household waste

What happens to your paper

The Borough Council's kerbside paper collection scheme will take approximately 4000 tonnes per annum to UPM Kymene - Shotton Paper Mill for recycling.

The paper mill has a recycling capacity of 400,000 tonnes per year. Many thanks for your participation and enthusiasm.

Kerbside Collection

Stored at Local site

When we have collected your paper it is taken to a local site where it is held until taken to Shotton Paper Mill.

Shotton Paper Mill

It is then sent through several processes within the mill to produce clean recycled paper for use in the newspaper industry.
