Kerbside Recycling - Help and Advice

The average contents of the domestic waste bin before recycling % by volume
Household Waste Chart

The diagram above shows the proportions of waste in the average domestic bin.

The area shaded silver represents the amount of materials that can be recycled in the silver bin.

Householders that participate in the recycling service, the paper collection scheme, and use the garden waste service will be recycling at least 63% of their waste bin.

To minimise problems, follow these rules:
  1. If possible keep your bin out of direct sunlight and away from open windows or doors.
  2. Keep the bin lid shut at all times. If you notice flies, maggots or smells, check that your bin lid fits securely when it is closed.
  3. Do not leave food waste, cat or dog food exposed in the home so that flies can lay their eggs on it, before it is put into your green residual waste bin.
  4. Wrap all food waste in old newspaper and then in plastic carrier bags/ kitchen bin liners before placing it in your black residual waste bin.
  5. Squeeze any excess air from the bags before tying them and placing them in the bin.
  6. Empty any solids from used disposable nappies into your WC before bagging and placing in your external bin.
  7. Carbon filters can be bought that fit onto the inside lid of your bin to absorb smells. Alternatively, use 'odour eater' foot insoles stuck to the inside of the lid. Carbon filters can be purchased from the Council's Pyms Lane Depot, Lyceum Theatre and Nantwich Customer Service Centre
  8. Regularly clean and disinfect your bins.
  9. Compost as much organic waste as possible.
  10. If you find that you have too much excess waste, contact us on the number below to arrange for a waste audit. Subject to the audit being successful we may be able to offer additional capacity.

If you are still having problems with managing your waste, contact the Household Adviser on the number below or email recycling@crewe-nantwich.gov.uk.
