KERBSIDE RECYCLING SCHEME
The new kerbside recycling scheme
for cardboard, plastic bottles, tins, cans and aerosols has already
been introduced to the whole borough. If you have recently moved
into a new property and you do not have a recycling bin or waste
bin or a collection calendar please phone 01270 537868
Weekly collections will
continue but the materials collected will be dependant on the bin
to be collected. One week for the silver grey recycling bin and the
next for the black domestic waste bin.

Why is this
scheme being introduced?
We produce about 50,000 tonnes of
rubbish each year in the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich. At present
only about 10,000 tonnes are recycled. This leaves 40,000
tonnes still being sent to landfill. There is nothing good about
landfill... it is a source of water and air pollution, and it is
contributing to climate changes that are happening here and all
over the planet. The council wants to reduce the amount of waste
sent to landfill and this needs to be done on a yearly basis. One
of the best ways to achieve the required reduction in the amount of
waste being sent to landfill is to recycle more materials.

Bringing recycling to your doorstep
will make it easier for everyone to participate. No more excuses
that it is too much effort to take the materials to the bring
banks. We will have more materials saved as a 'resource' to be
recycled into new products and less buried as waste in
landfill.
The environmental
consequences of not recycling biodegradable waste.
Biodegradable waste, such as garden
and kitchen waste, paper and cardboard that is sent to landfill
decomposes anaerobically (without oxygen).
A by product of this process is methane, a potent
and polluting greenhouse gas that is contributing to climate
change.
To avoid this we need to divert as much biodegradable waste from
landfill as possible. This is why all local authorities are working
to introduce recycling schemes and promoting home composting.
