Garden Waste Collection
Scheme
Background Information - Waste
Minimisation
Burying garden waste in the landfill
is highly damaging to the environment. It eliminates the air from
the decomposition process and the organic material then decomposes
anaerobically and produces methane a highly polluting green house
effect gas, which contributes to global warming. It also produces
liquids called leachate that can pollute the rivers and ground
waters. This issue concerns everyone.
Garden Waste Collection
Scheme
Since March 2003 the Borough Council has
extended the collection service to the entire Borough, now
totalling 52,000 properties. All residents are offered three
choices to dispose of their green waste as they can no longer use
the domestic bin. These choices are:
- Home composting - visit www.recyclenow.com/compost to
get your reduced price bin.
- Take to the Cheshire County Council Recycling Centre at Pyms
Lane.
- The optional subscription based Garden Waste Service operated
by the Borough Council.
We currently have around 40% of
Borough households in the Garden Waste Service.
The garden waste service has
been well used, even into the winter months.
Approximately 5,500 tonnes per year are collected and
then taken to local compost farms. There it is shredded,
composted, spread onto farmland and returned into the
farmland.
It is very encouraging to see so
many people actively taking part in this scheme. We hope that now
it has been extended, the other households involved, who are unable
to home compost, will also take advantage of the opportunity to
help the whole Borough by recycling their garden waste.
Garden Waste Scheme - How to Apply
| There is
an annual collection fee for this service which is currently £23.00
for your first bin and £12.00 for additional bins at the same
property.
A standard 240L bin is normally
provided, however a limited number of smaller 140L bins are
available for those with smaller gardens for the same service
fee.
The annual charge is for the 12
month collection service which includes your first brown bin.
Please note that the annual charge is made until the end of the
collection period (as detailed below), regardless of the time of
joining the scheme.
The annual charge runs from:
- 1st August - 31st July - All rural areas of the
Borough.
- 1st April - 31st March - All remaining areas
However, if you aren't sure which
payment cycle your household falls in to, please get in touch on

What to put in your Brown Wheeled Bin
Only the following
materials should be placed in the wheeled bin
- Leaves
- Lawn mowings
- Bark
- Cut flowers
- Hedge clippings
- Plants
- Twigs & small branches
- Windfalls*
- Contents only of potted plants and hanging baskets
What NOT to put in your Brown Wheeled Bin
- Meat, fish, all cooked food waste, cooking fat, oil, wax or
waxed packaging, foil
- Soil, stone, rubble or large amounts of turf
- Paper, plastic, glass, metals, leather, porcelain, disposable
nappies, dog and cat waste, ash, vacuum cleaner contents,
pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, batteries, dyestuffs, textiles
- Vegetable peelings, salad, fruit, tea, tea bags, coffee grounds
and filters, egg shells, stale bread and crusts*
- Feathers, pet straw, sawdust and wood shavings
Please note a contaminated wheeled
bin cannot be emptied. The householder must remove the
contamination.
* The reason that we cannot
accept kitchen organic waste relates to regulations arising from
Foot and Mouth infections. All of the waste collected from the
Garden Waste Service goes back on to farmland, therefore we have to
ensure that there is a break in the food chain to prevent any
future outbreaks. However, if you do wish to dispose of kitchen
organic waste, you can do so by home composting.
