Disposal Options (Alternatives
to Tipping)
What are the
alternatives?
Incinerators: these are used
throughout Europe and with modern technology are accepted as safe
and relatively friendly to the environment. But these would also
have to be sited somewhere, and experience still suggests that few
people would choose to live close to such plants. (Vehicles still
have to travel to and from them to unload!)
The best solution would be
to reduce the amount of rubbish we all throw away every day,
and this is the theme of a major new council drive.
There are many people in the borough
who are already doing their best to help. But it has to become the
majority of us before we can make a real impact on the problem and
reduce, or avoid, the need for more incinerators.
Quite apart from the fact that it
makes good common sense, we in the Borough have been given tough
government targets for the reduction of non-recycled waste.
Here's how you can
help:
- Recycle your paper: Use the kerbside
collection scheme run by the borough council. Of course if you
don't have room to keep the wheelie bin other alternatives are
smaller containers (bags or a small box) or to use the local
recycling centres throughout the Borough - for more details

Contribution: One Quarter of the rubbish we dump is
paper
And don't forget - reduce your paper waste by cancelling junk mail
by contacting the Mailing Preference Service on 0845 703 4599 or
checking out their web site www.mps-online.org.uk If
there's a reply paid envelope - send it all back including the
envelope it came in.
- Put kitchen and garden waste into compost. The
Council can offer a home composting bin for your garden or
back yard; we also offer a guide to home composting for more

- Recycle all glass, plastic and textiles such as old
clothes. There are around 120 recycling sites at
supermarkets and car parks across the Borough - for more details

Soon the Council will be providing more, and asking businesses and
organisations to help.
