Valley Community Action
Group
The Valley CAP as the Committee is more commonly known, for many
years have organised various events for Children and Adults
including, Play schemes, Safer Community Meetings, Christmas
party's, Computer courses, Community clean up days and a regular
Football Team with professional Coaching plus a small amount of
gardening.
So it was decided that the
Allotments in Alton Street was a good option to give the young
adults as we like to call them a chance to try and grow vegetables
and learn how to Compost waste. Glyn Ollier and George Ford were
contacted and an Allotment was obtained, Glyn arranged the
rotavation and the fun began.
Paul Beamon, Jill Beamon, Russell
Cole, Lara Cole, Edith Roberts and Kath Harvey started to organise
the Allotment, the only thing was that we were as green as the
grass growing around the Allotment - where planting and growing was
concerned as to what could be planted and when. So we reverted to
the Internet and picked the brains of George Ford and other
Allotment holders on the Alton Street Site, some who were very
helpful and even donated plants and seeds to give us a start.
We decided to run the Allotment as
the Dream Scheme which in effect is when the young adults work on
the Allotment they earn points which will obtain them a treat when
enough points are achieved, at the moment they are working towards
a Disco party.
The young adults were very impressed
with the planting and growing on the Allotment of: Dwarf Beans,
Potatoes, Cabbage, Runner Beans, Lettuce Red/Green, Onions
Red/White, Marrows, Garlic, Cauliflower Broad Beans and Sprouts. As
they tended the plants they were becoming aware of what the plants
were by how they looked and were growing, not by the shape of the
bag that you buy them in!
The group achieved a special award
from the Allotment Competition which made them very proud of their
efforts.
The produce from the Allotment was
distributed around the area for small donations to help in the
purchasing of seeds/plants for the next growing period. Everything
was grown organically with no pesticide sprays and all weeds and
paper are being Composted and returned to the soil. at the moment
the group are planting small plots of bulbs that they will tend to
supply flowers for their Mother on Mothers day.
As you can see from the photos below
we didn't do to bad for the first attempt and hope to grow bigger
and better next time!
Thanks from the Cap Committee and
the young Adults to Glyn Ollier, George Ford, Pete Sinclair, Cllr
Tom Dunlop and all the other people involved for all their help
including other Allotment holders at the Alton Street Site,
Crewe-Nantwich BC, Cheshire CC, Wulvern Housing, Crewe Homewatch
and the Health Shield Chronicle Community Action Fund who supported
us with funding for the New Shed.
