Pollution Control Air Quality
During the early 1990s, the U.K. government investigated the
need for a new framework to deal with air quality control
throughout the country. The need for a change in approach was
largely brought about by episodes of poor air quality especially
within large urban areas and concerns expressed by both members of
the public and various professionals. This was coupled with
the principle behind Local Agenda 21 issues that future air quality
has to be protected. However, this has been taken further
within the area of air quality with the development of the National
Air Quality Strategy.
The Environment Act 1995 introduced the Local Air Quality
Management (LAQM) system, which requires Local Authorities to
periodically carry out a review and assessment of the air quality
within their area. The pollutants, which have to be assessed,
are:
Particulates (PM10)
Lead
Sulphur dioxide
Carbon monoxide
Benzene
1,3 Butadiene
