 SCORES ON THE DOORS

Scores on the Doors is a scheme designed to give the public the opportunity to make informed choices about where they eat.

The information the scheme provides relates to the overall food safety standards found at the last food hygiene inspection.

Businesses will be awarded a star rating from "NO STARS" to "3 STARS" dependant on the food safety standards identified at the time of the last food hygiene inspection. The better the standards the higher the star rating.

The Council does not accept any liability for any loss or damage arising from errors in or omissions from its Scores on the Doors database.

What is "scores on the doors"?
'Scores on the doors' is a scheme which allows the public to view the latest hygiene rating following a programmed food hygiene inspection carried out by Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council's Commercial Team. The score will be in the form of a star rating.

Why is the scheme being introduced?
The scheme will provide an extra incentive for food businesses to have high standards of food hygiene.  It will also provide the public with more information about a food business in an easy-to-understand form such as a star rating.

Will all food businesses be included in the scheme?
All food businesses are inspected by the Council. However, some types of food business pose a greater risk than others because of the type of food they sell and the direct contact they have with food.  The scheme only covers these types and they include:
  • Restaurants
  • Takeaways
  • Cafes
  • Pubs serving food
  • Canteens

How will a business get a star rating?
Following a programmed inspection the officer will score the business based on a national scoring scheme endorsed by the Food Standards Agency. The business will then be star rated according to :
  1. Confidence in Management
  2. Food Hygiene and Safety Procedures
  3. Structural Condition of the premises

What do the star ratings mean?
The star rating lets you see at a glance the hygiene standards in the business at the time of inspection

STAR RATING
STANDARD OF FOOD SAFETY
 * * *
Achieving high standard of food safety and legal compliance. Good practice is being followed.  Possible minor legal contraventions.
 * *
Satisfactory standard of food safety compliance. Some minor legal contraventions.  Premises is in the top 50% of businesses.
 *
Some major non compliances, improvement in standards required
NO STARS  Poor standards, formal action may be taken.

The rating given to a premises is based on the last programmed inspection and as such represents the situation as found by the officer on the day of that inspection. Standards may have improved or even got worse since then.  The Scores on the Doors should not be considered as a guarantee of food safety or food quality.

When will a business be given a star rating?
A business will be given a star rating within a month from when it is inspected. The date of the inspection depends on when the business was last inspected and the hygiene conditions found at the time. The worst performing businesses are inspected more often than the better performing businesses. A business with poor food safety will be inspected every 6 months but one with good standards will be inspected every 18 months.

Will the star rating change?
If food hygiene standards change at the next scheduled inspection, then the star rating will change.  A scheduled food hygiene inspection will only take place when it is due unless a food business closes and a new one opens.

What if a food business operator disagrees with his rating?
A food business operator can make representations to the Commercial Team Leader who will review the documents relating to the inspection.  The star rating will only be changed if a clerical error has been made.  A business will not be re-inspected where the operator disagrees with the inspector's scoring.

How often is the Scores on the Doors list updated?
The Scores on The Doors list will be updated each month.
