Dog Warden Service
DOG CONTROL
Unfortunately dogs can be a nuisance
if not properly controlled and some owners are not as responsible
about their pets as they should be. Crewe and Nantwich Borough
Council's Dog Warden is always willing to offer advice and
information to dog owners in order to resolve problems and avoid
nuisance. The Warden patrols the Borough on a daily basis and is
usually on duty between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Contact 01270 537812.
The Dog Warden's duties are:-
- Dealing with stray dogs in public places - When dogs stray they
can be a serious hazard. They may attack people, other dogs or
livestock. They will sometimes bite people who come near them
because they are frightened and disorientated. The biggest problem
with stray dogs however is the danger they cause to road traffic.
Every year people are killed and injured in road traffic accidents
caused by stray dogs.
- Lost and found dogs - If you wish to report a lost or found dog
there are a number of ways that this can be done. As Officers are
responsible for the Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council area we
will only be able to inform you of dogs that have been lost or
found within our area.
- Managing the dog registration scheme and microchipping
scheme.
- Enforcing "dog ban" areas.
- Enforcing dog fouling legislation, provision of "no fouling"
signs and advising on dog waste bins.
- Enforcing collars and tags legislation.
- Giving talks on responsible dog ownership to interested parties
and schools.
- Taking part in publicity campaigns relating to dogs.
During the course of his duties, he
also liaises with dog training clubs, kennels, vets and animal
welfare organisations.
The Dog Warden's
duties DO NOT include:-
- Collection of unwanted dogs.
- Dealing with dangerous dogs.
- Dealing with cats.
- Collection of dead dogs.
- Collection and return of dogs from nominated holding
kennels.
- The emptying of dog waste bins.
If a stray dog has an identification
tag or has been microchipped the Dog Warden will, in the first
instance, make every attempt to return the dog to its owner.
However if the dog is collected for a second time it will
immediately be taken to the holding kennels.
If you have lost your dog, please contact the Dog Warden in the
first instance providing descriptive details of dog and the likely
place where dog could have strayed. Further enquiries can be made
at the kennels. The kennels will hold stray dogs for up to 3 days.
On confirmation that the lost dog is being detained at the kennels,
please make arrangements to collect the dog.
The fee for the current financial year (2008/09) for collecting the
dog from the kennels is:-
- Release of Animal - £66.00
Dogs will only be released to their
rightful owner on payment of the above fee. Instalment payments are
not accepted. Payments should be by cheque or cash. Owners in
receipt of certain benefits such as income support will pay a
Standing Charge of £33.00
Dogs not claimed within 3 days are transferred to the Stoke City
Dogs Home where every effort is made to re-home the animals.
