Summary of the Key Stages of the Street Naming Process
Suggestions for the street names in new developments are normally put forward by the Developer for consideration.
In the absence of suggestions from the Developer, the Street Naming team will research suitable names, and put them forward for consultation.
Prior to the proposed names being considered, the Street Naming Team will check with the Post Office for their approval. This is to ensure that there is no risk of duplication, or selecting a name, which could be confused with an existing street name.
A period of consultation takes place with Ward Members and Parish or Town Councils. It is at this stage that alternative names can be put forward and for views to be heard and any objections to be raised.
When the name has been agreed it is put forward for decision to Development Control Committee.
The process takes a minimum of 6 weeks and great care is taken to ensure that all views and objections are heard and that the process is as fair as possible to all those involved.
