At the Annual Council of Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council on Wednesday 14th May, Borough Councillor Brian Silvester, who has been Council Leader for the past two years, was elected as Mayor of the Borough Council.  Councillor Silvester will be the last Mayor of the Borough as it is presently constituted and will be in office up to 31st March 2009.  At that time, the Cheshire East Unitary Council will take responsibility for delivering all local services.

Councillor Silvester currently represents the Borough’s Willaston Ward and was first elected as a Borough Councillor in 1976.  He is aged 56 and was elected, on 1st May, to serve on the new Cheshire East Council as one of the three Conservative members to represent the Rope Ward.

Councillor Silvester will be supported in his mayoral role by his partner, Mayoress, Ms Sheila Davies.  The Mayor has invited Borough Councillor Rachel Bailey to act as his Deputy for the coming year and Councillor Bailey’s Consort will be her husband Mr Steven Bailey.

In his acceptance speech, before a packed Council Chamber, the Worshipful, the Mayor, Councillor Silvester said:  “I would like to put on record my thanks to the residents of Shavington and Rope and since 1999, the residents of Willaston Ward for giving me the honour of representing them.  Their support has allowed me to lead this Council and has now enabled me to become Mayor.”

He continued:  “I am sure that my late parents would have been proud of the honour that has been conferred on me today.  The Mayoral Team will serve the Borough and do our best to justify the trust that has been placed in us today.”

Councillor Silvester added that:  “The Mayoral theme for the year is to be “Lifelong Learning” in all its forms.”  He paid tribute to the schools, colleges and, in particular, South Cheshire College, Reaseheath College and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU Cheshire) in the Borough.

Councillor Silvester thanked outgoing Mayor, Councillor Maurice Jones and his civic team and concluded by saying that “We are a dynamic Borough with a proud record of taking things forward and we will continue to go from strength to strength.  The new Cheshire East Council is the next stage of our evolution and will present the citizens of Crewe and Nantwich with new opportunities.”
