KILTS AND COLD WAR IN TOWN

Crewe and Nantwich Town Centres will once again be alive with music this Saturday (17th) between 11am-2pm, as the Street Entertainment programme continues to entertain shoppers and visitors into town.

At Crewe, the South Cheshire Pipe Band returns by popular traders demand.  These highly colourful performers, from the local area, feature kilts, sporrans and tartan attire.  They certainly look the part… and very smart too!

The Band was formed in 1980 and is registered with the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.  They play at Fêtes, Festivals and Garden Parties as well as leading Veteran’s Parades and providing Street Entertainment in various towns in East and South Cheshire. The Band’s high spots were performing at the Anderton Lift when HRH Prince Charles officially re-opened it and, in 2005, they took part in the Marie Curie Fund Raising Marches at Edinburgh.

At Nantwich, we are joined for the first time, by the Secret Bunker from Hack Green, with their bunker display, vehicle and officers in uniform.  There will also be a display of children’s crafts.

Hack Green played a central role in the defenses of Britain for almost sixty years.  Located in the picturesque farmland and rolling Cheshire countryside on Nantwich’s doorstep, it is hard to imagine that this was such an important part of the country’s defences during the Cold War.

Elaine Dodd, Crewe and Nantwich Town Centres Manager, said:

“This year’s programme has something to appeal to everyone and the feedback, so far, is that shoppers have certainly enjoyed the entertainment and that shop outlets have benefited because people remain in town longer… so everyone gains!

“It is great to welcome The Hack Green Secret Bunker display into town for the first time.  Having recently visited this tourist attraction, I can confidently say that it is well worth seeing – a real piece of twentieth century history.  The children will have a great time hunting for the hidden mice around the displays.”
