2nd May 2008

The 2008 Cheshire East Elections were concluded today following the count process which has seen a total of 81 Councillors elected to represent residents within the Cheshire East area.  The Cheshire East Unitary Authority will be fully operational from 1st April 2009 and,as a result, will see the abolition of Crewe & Nantwich, Congleton and Macclesfield Borough Councils and Cheshire County Council.

During this transitional year, the Cheshire East Shadow Council will work alongside existing Councils to ensure a seamless handover to the new arrangements in the Spring of 2009.

Arrangements have been made to hold the first meeting of the Cheshire East Unitary Shadow Council, on Tuesday 13th May 2008, in the Council Chamber at the Municipal Buildings, based in Crewe.

Councillor Maurice Jones, Mayor of Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council, said:  "I am delighted that Crewe has been chosen as host of the first meeting of the Shadow Council.  The facilities at the Municipal Buildings are excellent and very fitting for this prestigious and historic occasion. This is extremely good news for the area.”
