Trees - A Gift for Life
0047/ir
26 March 2008
Nantwich Ward Councillors have given a ‘gift
for life’ from their Ward budgets to replace the huge birch tree
that blew down in storms in January 2006.
The money has been used to plant two silver
birch trees and a flowering cherry tree on the grassed consecrated
area fronting St Mary’s Church.
The silver birch tree is a beautiful tree with
a certain grace. It is know often as the ‘Lady of the Woods’,
as it is said to have protective influences and is symbolic of new
birth. Birches are monoecious, meaning that each individual tree
has both male and female flowers. Their male flowers are drooping
catkins and the female flowers ripen to form hanging catkins.
The flowering cherry tree will be spectacular
as it grows providing natural confetti during St Mary’s spring time
weddings. The blossoms are a clear sign that spring is here
and summer is on the way.
Councillor Arthur Moran said: “Giving a
gift of a cherry tree will outdo any gift of flowers and will allow
our towns people to enjoy a lifetime of one of the prettiest UK
trees. There are many social, economic and environmental
benefits, adding to the pleasure of our gift of trees.”
Councillor Joyce Stockton said: “We do
hope the trees will provide much pleasure for years to come to
those living, working and enjoying our beautiful town of
Nantwich.”
Environmentally, planting just one young
healthy tree provides a net cooling effect to the equivalent of ten
room size air conditioners operating over 5.5 days. They
remove CO2 from the air, fight global warming, produce oxygen
support large communities of insects and provide song birds a
home.
