28 March 2008
Day 2 of the 2008 World Track Cycling Championships held in
Manchester during 26-30 March 2008, saw Shanaze Reade, a
local Crewe rider and her team partner Victoria Pendleton take Gold
in the Women Team Sprint ride-off at 33.661 seconds, which has
resulted in yet another new world best for the event and the
athletes themselves.
Shanaze was awarded ‘Sports Personality of the
Year’ at the 2008 Mayor’s Oscars award ceremony held at the Civic
Hall in Nantwich on 22 February 2008. Her contribution
to competitive sport has been outstanding winning the 2007 BMX
Elite Women’s world title and 3 World titles as a junior. She
also competed in the World Championships held in Majorca during
early 2007 along with her team partner, Victoria and achieved 3
world records in the Team Sprint event.
Shanaze will be heading to Beijing Olympic
Games in 2008 to compete in the BMX event which makes its Olympic
debut. It is comforting to know that all this started off
using the Tipkinder BMX track in Crewe. The Worshipful, the
Mayor, Councillor Maurice Jones on behalf of the Borough Council
would like to congratulate Shanaze on her achievement and wish her
every success this summer.
