At a full meeting of the Crewe and
Nantwich Borough Council on the 23rd January, it was
agreed that Cllr. Brian Silvester will be proposed as Mayor at the
Annual Council meeting in May. The Borough Council is due to be
abolished and replaced with the Cheshire East Unitary Council in
April next year so Cllr. Silvester will be the last Mayor of the
Borough.
Councillor Silvester, aged 56, was first
elected to the Borough Council in 1976, representing the Shavington
Ward. He now represents the Willaston Ward. He has been a
Borough Councillor for 27 years. He was born in the house next door
to the Churches Mansion in London Road in Nantwich and is proud to
be a Dabber. He attended the Manor Road Primary School in Nantwich
and then attended the Nantwich and Acton Grammar School in Welsh
Row. He has lived and worked in the Borough all his life and lives
at Shavington House Farm. Councillor Silvester cut his
political teeth as Chairman of Nantwich Young Conservatives before
he was elected to the Council. He has been the Leader of the
Conservative Group three times and Leader of the Council twice.
From 1995 to 1998, Cllr Silvester attended Staffordshire University
where, as a mature student, he gained a Bachelor of Arts degree
with Honours in Business Studies and Politics.
Now ready and willing to be the Borough’s
‘last first citizen’, Councillor Silvester wants to build on the
growth, prosperity and dynamism that have become features of
Cheshire’s fastest growing Borough in recent years. He said:
“It is a great honour that my colleagues have put me forward
to be Mayor. I am really excited at the prospect of seeing
this Borough continue to grow and prosper as we move into the next
phase of our evolution. We now have our own rapidly
developing academic sector which includes a prospering University
and we are home to the world’s finest motor car. We have a
long tradition of excellence anchored in our rail engineering
heritage and we have a beautiful rural hinterland. Nantwich
is a delightful historic market town and we make pretty good cheese
too!”
“It is sad that the Borough Council is coming
to an end after 34 years, but we must be positive and ensure that
Crewe and Nantwich takes up its rightful place in the new Council
and that local residents do not lose out. The Borough Council
is being abolished but I am sure that our Borough will go from
strength to strength. I am determined that the Borough
Council will go out in a ‘blaze of glory’.”
