The Mayor of Crewe and Nantwich, Borough
Councillor Brian Silvester, hosted a civic reception for ex-service
men and women to mark the Annual Veterans Day on Friday
27th June. The event was attended by former army,
navy, air-force and auxiliary personnel who had seen service all
over the world in times of peace and in times of war.
The veterans gathered to mark the day as part
of a national festival of recognition of the vital role that people
played during their active service and a celebration of the
contribution that the 5.5 million former services personnel make to
their communities each and every day. Minister for Veterans,
Derek Twigg MP led the main national event that ran from
21st June in Blackpool and it was attended by the
Duchess of Cornwall who represented Her Majesty the Queen.
Councillor Brian Silvester said: “This
is for me, as the Mayor of the Borough, a very important
occasion. We value extremely highly the service that so many
young men and women have given in serving their country and
remember those that have lost their lives in the defence of their
nation. It is an honour to be able to meet you all this
evening and to host this important recognition of your
service.”
