As the school holidays get under way, neighbourhoods across the country are gearing up for this year’s Playday, the annual celebration of children’s right to play, which takes place on Wednesday 6th August.

Playday is a national campaign, now in its 21st year, where thousands of children and young people get out and play at locally organised events.

The theme for 2008's Playday campaign is Give us a go! The campaign calls for children to be allowed challenging and adventurous play opportunities and aims to shake off the 'cotton wool' culture that can limit children’s play.

GMTV have been promoting Playday all week and Persil are also proudly supporting Playday 2008. Persil is committed to championing the benefits of a more free childhood through the launch of their new campaign 'Every child has the right' and have launched a national campaign promoting and supporting Playday 2008.

The Crewe & Nantwich Play Partnership in Conjunction with Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council have organised a fun filled family fun day in celebration for National Playday. The event will take place on Wednesday 6th August at 11am until 3pm at Shavington Leisure Centre, Rope Lane, Crewe.

Activities on the day include: Circus and Percussion Workshops ran by Circus Sensible, Balloon Modeling, Arts and Crafts, Mini Train Rides, Rodeo Bull, Climbing Wall, Bouncy Castles, Face Painting, Baby Play, plus lots more. There will be activities for all ages from tots to teenagers and all activities are FREE.

Children are being invited to come along with their bikes to join in with BMXing activities. Cheshire Police will also be doing free security markings on bikes.

Borough Councillor and Portfolio Holder for Leisure Bill McGinnis said:  “Indoor and outdoor play for our youngest residents is a very important element in developing children and, through the long summer holidays, having fun with their friends is the stuff that makes for great memories of childhood.  I am pleased that the Borough has secured funds to support this initiative and can call upon trained staff to deliver it in the community.”

For more information on the event please contact Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council, Children’s and Families Team on 01270 537164.
