Councillor Jacquie Weatherill, Portfolio holder said, “This is one of the highlights not to be missed in this year’s programme of Street Entrainment which is valued by shoppers and local businesses.  With many visitors also expressing a wish that they too could enjoy locally provided programmes, where they live.

The entertainment adds to the vibrancy and enjoyment of visiting the town centres and often local perfomers utilise the opportunity to promote their own talents, which is wonderful to support – do come along to either, or both, town centres to see and enjoy the free entertainment on offer.”

There will be more local talent to look out for on Saturday 2nd August as the Star Search talent competition takes place in Crewe, with cash prizes up for grabs, including a £200 first prize kindly supported by Wulvern Housing and the Market Centre Crewe.

BECKY TAYLOR

http://www.beckytaylor.info/

Becky is one of the few female exponents of the Uilleann or Irish Pipes in England today. Well renowned as a solo performer and teacher, Becky has performed at folk festivals and events in the UK & Europe for the last 20 years.

Her debut album was released in December 2002 to critical acclaim throughout the folk scene.

Becky is renowned for her ability to give a distinctive interpretation to traditional tunes on a variety of instruments; Uilleann pipes, fiddle, Northumbrian pipes, whistle and duet concertina, and her skill in composing and arranging tunes that continue that tradition is a major feature of her music.

She has played with many bands in and around the North of England including popular Celtic bands The Rub, Reed Riot (with fellow piper David Lim), Gan Ainm, Gaelforce and The Daw Green Stompers to name but a few. Collaborations have included performances with Lindisfarne, and also with the Chieftains on their album 'A Chieftains Celebration' in 1988 after a series of performances with them in Dublin as part of the Citys Millennium celebrations. She was also a finalist in the 'BBC Young Tradition' awards for several years.

The name"Majenta Al – Jamilah" means "Majenta, the graceful" –referring to the more refined elegant and graceful styles of dance which Majenta displays.

Whenever I am able to do so, I also continue my studies of Bharata Natyam and Odissi dance which I adore thoroughly.

Majenta also studies and works musically with Gamelan orchestras, Samba Bands, African Drum and Dance ensembles, learning classical Tabla from Harjinder Mattharu Singh & Dr. Jeetha, and playing drum kit in various bands. Since 1997, she has been learning Classical Hindustani Vocal (Thumri and Dhrupad) at the Asian Music Circuit in London. Ialso studying Thumri with Savita Devi and Sunanda Sharma, and Dhrupad with Ashoka Dhar.

I've worked in North India, Saudi Arabia and throughout Western and Eastern Europe.
