Borough Council welcomes the Crewe Station
Debate

07 July 2008
In the light of last week’s media interest in
the future of Crewe Station and a recent high level meeting with
Network Rail, the Borough Council has responded to the debate.
Council Leader, Councillor John Hammond said
‘We have known for some time that Network Rail is considering its
options regarding the resignalling of the Crewe area, and the
impact this might have on the Station. It seems very likely
that one option will be to relocate the Station in the Basford
area. I must emphasise however, that nothing has yet been
decided, and when all the options and the implications are known,
Network Rail will be leading the consultation exercise, so that
everyone can have their say. Crewe is a town synonymous with
its Railway Station so it is absolutely vital that the most
comprehensive and widespread consultation possible is carried out
before a decision is made, and I would expect this to take place
later in the year.’
Councillor David Brickhill, Portfolio Holder
for Economic Development added, ‘Assuming the relocation of the
Station is ultimately an option put forward by Network Rail, it is
vitally important that all the costs and benefits are known and
assessed. Major investment in the Station is long overdue but
the spin-offs must be understood – the need for other big
infrastructure projects to run along side, the impact on the
regeneration of the town and wider sub-region and the ability to
create new, high quality jobs, must all be taken into
account. I look forward to a full and considered debate later
in the year.’
