Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council Contributes £10,000 to Cancer Unit Appeal

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council have been fundraising all year to support the Macmillan Cancer Unit Appeal at Leighton Hospital, raising nearly £10,000 for the state of the art cancer unit!

In June, 6 employees at Crewe Swimming Pool set themselves the ultimate challenge; climbing the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in just 24 hours! Assistant Manager Richard Jones and five of his colleagues raised a fantastic £1213.00 by climbing Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon in aid of the Macmillan appeal.

ReAct, the council’s annual performing arts event, took place at the Lyceum theatre in July and all proceeds from 2007’s event were donated to the Macmillan appeal. Local groups undertook their own fundraising events in preparation for the event from a sponsored stay awake to street collections, raising a further £3308.

In August Cllr John Hammond, the Portfolio Holder for the Local Environment, handed a cheque for £4600 to Macmillan Fundraisers – a donation from the council of £1 for every tonne of waste paper recycled by borough residents.

Funds raised from parade entries and collectors at the Crewe Carnival in August added a further £355.29 to the total.

Both Crewe and Nantwich Swimming Pools took part in Macmillan’s flagship fundraising event in September; The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning – raising a further £104.38.

The total raised by Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council reached a fantastic £9580.67! Leader of the Council, Cllr. Brian Silvester said: “I am very proud of our staff who have made such a tremendous effort to raise almost £10,000 for the new cancer unit. It shows that our staff not only deliver excellent services for local people, they are also committed to playing their part in the wider community. They deserve to be warmly praised for what they have done. What they have achieved has been quite remarkable.”

Alice Edmond, Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support said: “I’d like to pass on my warmest thanks to everyone at Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council for their hard work raising such a fantastic amount of money for the Macmillan Cancer Unit Appeal at Leighton Hospital.”
