Schools Competition

Two local Primary Schools have won fantastic prizes thanks to their community conscious pupils.  Twenty six Primary Schools took up this year’s challenge from the Council’s Community Wardens that had, as its theme, Good Citizenship and the Respect agenda.

During last November and December, the Community Wardens gave presentations to local Primary Schools.  They talked about the negative effects of anti-social behaviour, about being a good citizen and the role everybody has in the ‘respect agenda’. They asked the pupils to think about their contribution to their environment, answer a set of thought-provoking questions and to answer a tie-break question.

The Community Wardens marked all the entries and the Borough Mayor, Councillor Maurice Jones, judged the winning entries. The decision was very difficult with many schools making a fantastic effort. Every school will receive a certificate for their participation in the event.

Sound Primary School won the top prize of a laptop computer, kindly sponsored by Manchester and District Housing Association, and Monks Coppenhall Primary School won the ‘talking litter’ bin, sponsored by Wulvern Housing.

Councillor John Dwyer, Portfolio Holder for Safer Communities said:  “We have been pleased to see how many of the primary schools support the youngsters in understanding these important issues. The children will help by encouraging family and friends to be responsible.”

Councillor John Hammond, Portfolio Holder for the Local Environment, said: “School children welcome the chance to care for the environment and can play a part in improving the appearance of the area in which they live.”

Amanda Jones, from Manchester and District said: "We are delighted to be involved in any initiative that promotes a positive message to young people.  I am sure that the children involved understand the importance of being a good citizen and this can only mean a good thing for our neighbourhoods.  The prize is really well deserved."

The presentation to the two prize winning schools will be made by the Mayor, Councillor Maurice Jones, in the Mayors Reception at the Municipal Buildings in Crewe.  The two Schools will be invited to the Awards on FRIDAY 7TH MARCH AT 4.00 PM.
