A poster competition for primary schools across the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich attracted a large number of entries and was aimed at raising awareness of safety in the home.  On Tuesday 22nd April, the winning schools, represented by parents, and the individual winners from Year 6, visited the Municipal Buildings in Crewe to receive their prizes.

Sponsored by the supermarket chain Asda and the Primary Care Trust Healthy Schools campaign, the children each received an MP3 player and Emily Bell, first prize winner from Mablins Lane Primary School, also collected a cheque for £100 towards school funds.  The presentations were made by the Borough Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Maurice Jones and Mrs Ann Jones.  Sam Sample, Asda Customer Services Manager, represented the sponsors.

Second and third prizes went to Blake Williams from Edleston Road Primary School and to Laura McIntosh from Stapeley Broad Lane Primary School.  The Mayor said:  “It is never too early for young people to learn the basic rules that are so important in making and keeping us all safe in our homes.  These are important messages of awareness that the posters are designed to get across to children, their parents and other family members alike.”  For the Borough Council, Home Safety Co-ordinator, Karen Murdoch-Hollies, said:  “We have been aiming to raise levels of awareness so that accidents can be prevented.”

The competition was promoted by circulating all the Borough’s primary schools with teaching packs that covered –

  • How to find out about accidents
  • Falls
  • Burns and Scalds
  • Fires and a Fire Escape Plan
  • Choking and Suffocation
  • Toy Safety
  • D I Y Safety
  • Garden Safety
