On Tuesday 15th April, the Mayor of
the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich, Councillor Maurice Jones, met
with a group of fund-raisers from the South Cheshire Leukaemia
Fund. The delegation was led by Alan Jepson and his wife,
Grace, and included the outgoing Treasurer, Jim Grant, and his
successor, Michael Boffey. During the past year, the
fundraising activities enabled the members to give a cheque for the
sum of £9,000 to fund national research into a cure for leukaemia
conducted at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
Mr Jepson, who was awarded the MBE for his
work on behalf of the charity, is now in his 80’s and is still an
active aviator, though, he says: “I don’t fly as often as I
used to.” Trained to fly gliders with the RAF in 1943, Mr
Jepson saw active service in World War II and later ran a
well-known retailers in Nantwich.
Accepting the cheque on behalf of the
hospital, Councillor Jones said: The South Cheshire Leukaemia
Research Fund does a fantastic job in helping to eradicate this
terrible disease and I am full of admiration for the hard work that
the local fund-raisers put in to ensure that this valuable research
continues.”
