Death of MP Gwyneth Dunwoody is great loss to
people of Crewe and Nantwich Borough
It is with deep regret that the Borough
Council for Crewe and Nantwich learned of the death of its much
respected and long-serving Member of Parliament, the Honourable,
Mrs Gwyneth Dunwoody.
Mrs Dunwoody , aged 77, has represented Crewe
since 1974 and Crewe and Nantwich since 1983. She was “Mother
of the House”, the longest serving woman MP.
Held in great affection by local people from
across the political spectrum, her MP’s surgeries, held regularly
at her office on Nantwich Road, provided advice and support to all
who asked for her help.
Paying tribute to Mrs Dunwoody on behalf of
the Borough, the Mayor, Councillor Maurice Jones, said: “Mrs
Dunwoody was a great champion of the Borough and of the North
West. She brought energy, passion and real political power to
representing all the people in the Borough. Her loss will be
felt politically and personally by all of us. Personally, my
wife Ann and all our family members will miss a fine person and a
dear friend. Our thoughts are with her family. We are all the
poorer for her passing.”
Chief Executive of the Borough Council, Paul
Ancell, said: “Mrs Dunwoody had total belief in the people of
Crewe and Nantwich. She was a driving force in promoting the
area at every opportunity and its growth and prosperity is, in no
small part, due to her effort and commitment.
Tributes have been paid all day by local and
national figures as well as her constituents and Books of
Condolence have been set up at the Municipal Buildings in Crewe and
the Customer Service Centre at Nantwich Civic Hall so that people
can acknowledge Mrs Dunwoody’s years of personal service to the
residents of Crewe and Nantwich.”
The Borough’s flags will be flown at half-mast
until after the day of the funeral.
