ASDAN PROGRAMME

ASDAN AWARD
Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council Sports Development Team, in partnership with Connexions, Crewe, are delivering the ASDAN Programme for the 2006/07 academic year. This document is a brief overview outlining details of the award itself and how and who it is to be delivered by.

What is the ASDAN award?
ASDAN stands for Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network. The ASDAN qualifications and awards are used by schools, colleges and other organizations to provide opportunities for students 14-19 to develop personal, social and active citizenship skills, work-related skills, key skills and wider key skills.

Sport and physical activity is used as a tool to attract and engage the young people on the programme initially. Through this initial engagement, participants get to know the staff and information about the programme itself and will then either agree or not agree to partake in the programme.

Aims and Objectives of the Programme
The broad aim of the course is to enable young people to understand themselves and others better and to become more prepared for making the transition to adult life.
  • The ASDAN course provides a flexible, activity-based programme together with a framework for assessment, which facilitates the development and accreditation of personal and social skills within a variety of educational, training, employment and community contexts.
  • The ASDAN course develops personal and social competence (through the negotiation and completion of Award Scheme challenges) which is a crucial factor in maximizing opportunities for life-long learning and in becoming an effective member of adult society.
  • The ASDAN course develops and recognises candidates' ability to apply the Wider Key Skills in ways that are appropriate to different contexts in order to improve the quality of learning and performance. The Wider Key Skills are skills that are commonly needed for success in a range of activities in education and training, work and life in general.
Who is the ASDAN programme for?
The ASDAN programme is for pupils in Years 10 and 11. The target group for the programme is people from these academic years who are either not in school, or are on reduced timetables.

What qualifications will be achieved?
Through attending the ASDAN programme and undertaking the necessary work, young people will achieve a minimum of a bronze award. On achieving the Bronze Award, young people will then begin working towards the Silver Award.

The ASDAN Qualification has been approved by the regulatory authorities for England (QCA), Wales (ACCAC), and Northern Ireland (CCEA), and are approved by the Secretary of State under Section 96 and 97 of the Learning and Skills Act, for pre and post 16 provision.

ASDAN Qualifications are now counted alongside GCSEs in League Tables, as the revised School and College Achievement and Attainment Tables now include points for ASDAN's qualifications.

  • Access to purchase ASDAN publications and materials
  • Access to local network / moderation meetings and external quality assurance
  • Support and advice from your Area / Regional Co-ordinator and Central Office

The above will help us ensure that the course achieves the aims and objectives listed above, and more importantly ensure that the participants obtain a minimum ASDAN Bronze Award.
