Programmes for young people

Healthlynx

Healthlynx is a new and innovative activity programme for young people. The healthlynx programme aims to support and assist schools to deliver enjoyable health and fitness activities both inside and outside the curriculum. Physical activity provides an important vehicle for play and recreation, learning physical and social skills, developing creative intelligence and stimulating growth and fitness.

Recognising that traditional sports are not likely to appeal to all young people, the programme is aimed at encouraging those pupils who tend not to enjoy sport to try other non-competitive forms of physical activity, such as Cheerleading, Aerobics, Body Combat, Pilates, Skipping, Fun Games, Arcade and much more.In many cases the young people will not have experienced some of the activities, but will hopefully find them good fun as well as improving health.

MEND Family Weight Management Programme

MEND is an integrated multi-disciplinary approach to tackling obesity and overweight, placing equal emphasis on behavioural change, exercise and nutrition. Research has shown the programme to be effective and it is delivered in accordance with NICE guidelines and is approved by the DH, DCMS and DfES. Although the entry requirements and programme focus initially on the young person, parental/carer involvement is mandatory so that changes are eventually made to the behaviour of the whole family to ensure long term benefits.

Wishing Well

Wishing Well is a multi-agency, community-led project, aiming to improve the quality of life of West End residents through the delivery of a weekly programme of multi-activity sessions at different venues in the West End of Crewe, Grosvenor, St Barnabas and Coppenhall wards). The content of the programme is agreed by local people and a number of sport and exercise activities and cook’n’eat sessions have already taken place.

Currently the varied programme of activities is being delivered at Broad Street School, Ludford Family Centre, Underwood West School, Marshfield Community Centre, Our House, Leighton Primary School and the Leighton Centre. Activities include Yoga, Parents and Tots, Dance, Football, Over 60’s, Alternative Therapies and After Schools Clubs, Cook’n’Eat and Playschemes. The scheme was awarded £643,551 by the New Opportunities Fund for a 5 year project with support funding from CNBC, Cheshire County Council and Central Cheshire PCT. That funding ceased in November 2007 and only some activities are currently being delivered. Wishing Well is now a company Limited by Guarantee, has a contract to deliver the Community Café at the new Eagle Bridge Centre and is attempting to secure further funding to sustain its future.
