Bike2School
Bike2School is a CNBC led project aimed at encouraging safe alternative school journeys and in particular to increase the number of journeys to school made by bike, primarily by providing information on various related topics including:

  • Safe Routes to Schools
  • Routes 2 Action
  • School Travel Plans
  • School Cycling Champions
  • Funding
  • Cycle Training

Safe Routes to Schools (SRS)
Sustrans' Safe Routes to Schools initiative aims to make it possible for more young people to walk and cycle to school.

A successful Safe Route to School project can be developed without a School Travel Plan, but the process is made a lot easier if a plan is produced. The Sustrans information sheet FS16 'How to develop a school travel plan' gives guidance and can be found on their website below.

Routes 2 Action
Routes 2 action is a free publication publish every team which aims to support school communities with their Safe Routes to Schools projects. Subscription details are available on the SRS website above.

School Travel Plans (STP)
A school travel plan is a document produced by a school in conjunction with the Local Authority, it is a way to help to solve problems by bringing together the ideas and contributions of different groups of people. It includes all the issues relevant to journeys made to and from school and will cover concerns about health and safety, and suggestions for ways to make improvements.

The STP is a basis for measuring change, and, when approved by the governing body, it can become a formal statement of school policy and help with funding applications.

Ask your council who to contact, or Email Sustrans schools@sustrans.org.uk

Bike Trailer to School (from 'Cycling Solutions' National Cycling Forum Sept. 2001)
Many schools have introduced School Travel Plans, or participated in Safe Routes to Schools schemes. These often emphasise the role that cycling can play in reducing road traffic during peak hours. Infant schools generally tend to ignore this option, as their pupils are not considered old enough to cycle to school on their own. However, one school in surrey has found an imaginative approach.

Holmesdale Community Infant School in Reigate has a large catchment area and has experienced some major problems of traffic congestion on the surrounding roads. The school advanced the idea of using a bike trailer to take children to school. The school successfully bid to the Government's Safe and Sound Challenge for twelve trailer units and a storage shed, now located in the car park. A parent volunteer manages the rental of the trailers each week, which are free during term time. A small charge is levied for their use during holidays and this money is ploughed back into the scheme to pay for maintenance. Parents who regularly use the trailers during the term have first option on use during the holidays.

The use of the trailers, together with the introduction of walking  buses is part of the school's strategy to develop environmental education whilst reducing congestion around the school. Ultimately, the school hopes that the pupils will catch the cycling habit early and want to cycle themselves when they are older.

Cycle Training

Bike2School can provide cycling tuition delivered by a CTC National Standard qualified Instructor.
