New Services at the Eagle Bridge Health & Wellbeing
Centre.
We are please to announce the opening of our volunteer staffed IT
suite at Eagle Bridge, where visitors can access online health
information and services. And also the launch of our Signposting
Service, located both in our Eagle Bridge Office and within the IT
Suite, which will provide information on and directions to local
services, activities and facilities

| How
it all began |
|
The consultation process has been
ongoing for the past five years and Crewe and Nantwich Borough
Council has worked in partnership with the County Council, health
organisations, local groups and residents in the West End to
identify key areas of concern. Securing funding from the New
Opportunities Fund meant that we have been able to get the Wishing
Well Project underway and dreams and visions are starting to become
reality.
In June 2002 the Wishing Well Project, also known as the West End
Healthy Living Centre Project, was awarded £643,551 by the New
Opportunities Fund.

| Wishing Well started in 2003 with a free fun event
for people living in the West End of Crewe |
|
On Saturday 26th April 2003 a
free fun day event took place at The Oakley Centre in Crewe. The
local community picked the programme of activities; which included
Football, Crazy Golf, Dance, Drama, Arts, Bingo, Face Painting,
Bouncy Castle, Holistic Therapies, Multi-Gym sessions and a whole
lot more.
There was also the support of
short-term Crèche sessions for pre-school children. People were
invited to come along and join in the fun anytime between 10am and
3pm. The Mayor of Crewe and Nantwich attended at noon to join the
community in the Wishing Well celebrations.

| Aims and
objectives |
|
The central aim of the
Project is to improve the health, well being and quality of
life of the people in the West End and, now also, the Maw Green
area of Crewe
The
project has 5 key objectives
- To deliver a weekly programme of multi-activity sessions at
different venues within the West End and Maw Green.
- To improve and develop the personal skills of West End and Maw
Green residents.
- To reduce the level of family stress.
- To improve the general health and wellbeing of West End and Maw
Green residents.
- To improve the community relationship and spirit of the West
End and Maw Green areas of Crewe

| Partnerships |
|
Without help and support from our
partner organisation the project would not have been nearly so
successful.
Here are just a few examples of
the help we have received over the years:
Nearly all venues provide free
room hire.
Working closely with SureStart
and the NSPCC ensures high standards of child-care and family
support whilst providing value for money.
South Cheshire College brings
students into the community to provide holistic therapy
sessions.
Manchester Metropolitan
University provides volunteers and access to performances and
workshops.
Crewe and Nantwich Borough
Council, Central and East Cheshire Primary Care Trust, and the
NSPCC all help with resources and provide training for our staff,
volunteers and scheme participants.
Local Housing Trusts have used our project to develop several
community initiatives and have provided funding and resources to
help us focus more on certain areas where extra support is
needed.

News......
Wishing Well Project (Company Limited
by Guarantee)
The Wishing Well Project has recently come to the end of five years
funding provided by the Big Lottery, Cheshire County Council, Crewe
and Nantwich Borough Council and the Primary Care Trust. During
these five years the Project has gone from strength to strength –
working with residents from the West End and Maw Green area’s of
Crewe on issues to do with improving Health and Well Being of the
local community. This work has taken place in up to 17 different
venues including schools and community centres and activities have
been chosen by the community through representatives on the
steering group. Although this funding has ended many of the
activities are continuing with the help and dedication of trained
volunteers – most of them living in the area and keen to continue
to support and develop the services that are already in place.
One of the biggest
developments for the project is the setting up of the
Wishing Well Community Café in the new Eagle Bridge Health
and Well Being Centre on Dunwoody Way. This centre is a
combination of three local GP practices, dental services,
physiotherapy, health visiting team, speech and language, and many
other services for which people would have in the past had to
attend hospital out patient departments. When all of
the practices are established there will be a throughput of up
to 1,000 patients and visitors per day. The café will provide
nourishing, basic foods every day for staff and community and will
eventually develop a catering outreach service for functions,
training events and parties. All profits from the company will be
re-invested into the community services provided at the
centre, and activities such as cookery, training in nutrition and
healthy eating and obesity management will be offered to the
community on site.
Wishing Well is still in
need of more dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to help with
current provision and to develop services in the community; such as
after school and holiday clubs for children, parent and tots fun
sessions, family support/parenting sessions, fitness/sport sessions
and of course administration to help with registration, monitoring
and evaluation of all the activities on offer. Even an hour of your
time can make a huge difference to the lives of others – so if you
are interested, feel you have time or expertise to share please
don’t hesitate to get in touch – your input will be valued by all
concerned.
(All Wishing Well volunteers and staff working with
children/vulnerable people will be expected to have checks
completed by the Criminal Records Bureau)
Thank you for your
interest.
