Play Rangers

Role of a Play Ranger in Crewe
Play Rangers offer open access play sessions which are free for children and young people aged between 5 and 16. The ‘Open Access’ system means that children are free to come and go as they please, as no registration is required. The Play Rangers will work in parks, estate play areas and other outdoor public spaces across the whole of the Crewe & Nantwich Borough. Children will be encouraged to help plan sessions and chose the type of activities they would like on offer. Play activities will include, den building and tree climbing, ball games, arts and crafts. The Crewe and Nantwich Play Rangers will aid the children in finding fun things to do in their local environment, and to reassure parents that it is safe for children to play out.
Play Rangers will encourage children to play freely outdoors all year round and that the games that the Play Rangers engage in with the children during sessions will be continued by the young people in their absence. Play Rangers will be teaching children and young people how to use their local Play spaces responsibly, encouraging a sense of ownership towards their parks which possibly over time could aid the reduction in anti-social behaviour. The Play Rangers will work with a wide age range (5-16) and sessions will deliberately not be split into age groups. Play Rangers will demonstrate to the young people that they have the expectation that older children are to set a good example and to help to prevent bullying in the younger ones.

Play Rangers

The Play Rangers will work in teams of two, sometimes supported by Police Community Support Officers. They will work throughout the year, in all seasons of weather, working after school hours during term time and throughout the day in school holidays. The Crewe & Nantwich Play Ranger Scheme will encourage involvement and participation from parents and carers. Parents/ carers will be asked to fill in an ‘Adult Registration Form’. Volunteers are also encouraged but will be asked to undergo a CRB Check to establish that they are “responsible persons”.

Due to the open access, free play policy Play Rangers can not ensure children will stay on site and children are free to come and go as they please. In the event of an emergency, every effort will be made to contact a parent. However, if a child has an accident or is taken ill, a member of staff may call an ambulance.
