CREWE AND NANTWICH SCHEME FOR EQUALITY
Introduction
In April 2002, the Council began the necessary research and
preliminary consultation required to draft a race equality scheme
as part of its statutory duties under the Race Relations Amendment
Act. In November 2002, the final draft of the Crewe and
Nantwich Scheme for Equality was approved by the Council's Board
for the purposes of consultation.
The Council took the decision to adopt an inclusive approach
to equality, going beyond the legislative requirements, by
producing a scheme covering disability and gender in addition to
race, and committing to fair treatment regardless of colour, sexual
orientation, age, ethnic or national origin, trade union activity
or faith. The Scheme details the measures the Council will
take to meet its statutory duties of promoting good race relations
and eliminating discrimination. Agreed targets and action
plans will be the primary means by which our performance will be
measured, together with the ongoing monitoring of the Council's
relevant Best Value Performance Indicators.
The Scheme was formally adopted by the Board, following
consultation, on 10 April 2003. This document outlines the
results of the consultation exercise, together with a brief
commentary as to the Council's progress to date in meeting its
targets.
