The Role of the Community Wardens

The role of the Community
Wardens is to cut down dog fouling, littering, fly tipping and
anti-social behaviour in the Borough. The Wardens are supported by
both the Police and the Borough Council, and linked to other
agencies. They liaise with the community to identify causes of
concern that affect the quality of life in the neighbourhood. To do
this the wardens talk to people in the community, and provide
information and education as well as enforcing the
rules.
We currently have 5 wardens, 1 dog
warden and a senior enforcement officer.
Publicity
An important part of the Community Warden role is to inform
people about the work that they do. The publicity of the scheme
helps local people to understand the damage caused by unsociable
activities such as litter, dog fouling, fly tipping and neighbour
nuisance.
Court Action
As part of a long term drive to
clean up the borough, Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council's team of
Community Wardens continue to patrol the streets in order to catch
people dropping litter instead of putting it into a bin.
Since the Community Warden's
introduction in the summer 2003 they have caught numerous litter
offenders and issued 209 litter fixed penalty notices.
Recent action included a successful prosecution against a person
who tried to avoid paying the fixed penalty.
The individual was fined
£100 and ordered to pay £100 towards the costs after failing to pay
a £50 litter fixed penalty issued for dropping a fast food
container in Crewe town centre. The Wardens will now be looking to
take similar action against people caught offending in this
manner.
A Council spokesman said "the
Council is adopting a zero tolerance towards this type of
anti-social offending." He said: "Court action such as this sends a
clear message to those that receive fixed penalties that failure to
pay is likely to result in prosecution. We are determined to stamp
out this behaviour which has an adverse impact on the environment
and affects everyone's quality of life.

Clean Up The World 2008

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Councils
Community and Junior Wardens have partnered up with the United
Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) 2008 initiative to Clean up
the Worlds environment.
The Junior Warden scheme is a
partnership venture between Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council's
Community Wardens and Manchester and District Housing Association.
The scheme is designed to develop a sense of community pride
amongst young people by promoting constructive activities that
benefit the local area.
