Quality Counts

British Standards ISO 9002
The Cemeteries and Crematorium Section recognise that our users are
becoming more sophisticated, better informed and that their
expectations on the type of service they want are increasing.
In 1997, it was decided that one of the ways in which to meet
the growing needs was to offer our user a real commitment to
quality and getting things right.

A successful application, in
respect of Crematorium Administration was made to the British
Standards Instituted in 1997 and this was extended to include
administration of the Cemeteries in 2000. Each year, the systems
are audited by an Inspector from the British Standards Institute to
ensure that the systems in place are being maintained.
The reason why an application was made
to the British Standards Institute was simple, ISO 9000 is the most
commonly used international standard that provides a framework for
a quality management system and we wanted to be part of it.
The ISO 9002 is a quality assurance
system which provides a sound framework to help in our strive for
excellence and it is one that all of our staff are very proud to
have achieved.
Certification
of Funeral Directors
Following several consultation meetings with Funeral Directors, the
Cemeteries and Crematorium Management developed a scheme for the
Certification of Funeral Directors.
The scheme is based on the Codes of Conduct that many of our
Funeral Directors are required to adhere to and it commits them to
achieving rigorous standards in respect of staff training, customer
care, consultation with clients, complaints procedures etc.
The Certification Schemes aims to
guarantee that Funeral Directors who adopt the scheme will provide
the bereaved with a service of value for money, dignity, integrity
and respect.
The scheme is purely voluntary, to
have made it compulsory, we would have denied people with the
option of arranging funerals without a Funeral Director. However,
those Funeral Directors who sign up to the scheme are placed on the
Council's 'preferred' list.
The Council's 'preferred' list at the present time
is:

Licensing of Monumental Masons
Anyone, or organisation wishing to erect a memorial within the
Borough's Cemeteries can only do so if they have been issued with a
licence from the Council.
The monumental mason must agree to conform to the minimum criteria
outlined in the Council's conditions, before a licence can be
issued. Failure to conform to the conditions would mean that the
licence is revoked.
This scheme was developed to ensure
that all new memorials meet the required installation standards and
to minimise the possibility of headstones becoming unstable and
dangerous.
