Q) Who are my competitors likely to be?
A) Other market traders will provide the main
source of competition, although depending upon the location of the
market and the range of goods you sell, local discount stores, high
street shops or supermarkets could also be in competition with your
business. This is why it is so important to visit and assess the
competition.
The time you spend working as a 'casual' can be a useful
period for research. In addition to visiting our markets and
observing your competitors at work, other sources of information
include:
- Market websites that may list the businesses trading
- The websites of trade organisations, including the National
Market Traders Federation, the National Farmers Market Association
and the National Association of British Market Authorities
- Local newspaper business pages, particularly free newspapers
that may run special features on local markets and the traders
working at them
- Talking to other small businesses in the area you plan to
work.
