Tips
Always check where your children are playing and if it
is safe.

relative or neighbour, even the shallowest of ponds, can be lethal!
If your child is playing near one, a rigid mesh or grille can be
used to create a secure cover.
Wear gardening gloves
Mundane gardening tasks like planting, digging and mowing can
all lead to trouble. Cuts from tools and thorns are among the most
common injuries and could be often be prevented by wearing
gloves.
Always use a Power Breaker (RCD Residual Current
Device)
Garden tools can be very dangerous if they are not correctly
used. Electrical garden tools should always be used with an RCD,
which cuts off the power quickly in the event of an accident.
Maintenance must never be carried out while tools are plugged
in
Lock tools and chemicals away
Tools and chemicals should be kept out of reach of children
when not in use - preferably locked in a shed or garage.
Make sure your home play equipment is
safe

safe surface is critical. Concrete or packed dirt surfaces are too
hard. Use at least 9 inches of wood chips or mulch.
Install window guards to prevent children from falling
out of open windows.
In warm weather your windows are often left open. Guards
should be installed in children's bedrooms, parents' bedrooms, and
other rooms where young children spend time. Whenever possible,
open windows from the top - not the bottom. Also, keep furniture
away from windows to discourage children from climbing near
windows.
Food Safety
Remember, food perishes more quickly in warmer weather, so
ensure that all such food is stored in accordance with the
manufactures guidance.
Supervise children near barbecues at all
times
Barbecues should never be left unattended, and children must
stay clear of them even when the cooking is completed. Make sure
the barbecue is stable and on a level surface. Never use flammable
liquids on barbecues they can lead to explosions. Use thick gloves
when handling skewers and metal trays to prevent burns. Never use a
barbecue indoors it produces deadly carbon monoxide, which is
fatal.
Paddling pools should always be emptied and stored
safely
Water holds a particular fascination for young children under
the age of five. Whether the water is held in a garden pond, a
rainwater butt, a paddling pool or a bucket, a young child will
invariably investigate. Check the garden regularly for containers
holding rainwater and empty or seal them to prevent children
gaining access and of course always ensure that children are
supervised at all times while using a paddling pool.

3pm

10am and 3pm, when the sun's rays are their strongest. For sun tan
lotion, always wear a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or
higher. Be sure to reapply sunscreen frequently, especially after
swimming, perspiring heavily or drying off with a towel. Always
ensure very young children have SPF 45 or higher and babies are
kept out of the sun at all times.
